Your connection to the creative scene in Christchurch
The Zeiser Room is a loft apartment that sits above an arts production and exhibition space at the edge of the central city. The upstairs apartment includes a private bedroom with ensuite, and a full kitchen and lounge area with desk-space. Downstairs is Exchange Christchurch, a local foods cafe, gallery and events space with artist studios.
The Zeiser Room, named for the first artist to exhibit there, is quiet and private. The bedroom has a comfortable queen bed with an additional single-size cot available on request. Full bathroom with shampoo, conditioner, and bodywash. The upstairs lounge area has plenty of natural light and includes a corner workspace. The kitchen (shared with the downstairs cafe until 2pm) has everything you might need. The space is in an industrial area and you may hear traffic during the day.
Exchange Christchurch, the public space downstairs, is committed to connecting visitors to local businesses and artists. Exchange features weekly changing exhibitions and events, as well as a local foods cafe and a library. Check the calendar to plan your trip around an event!
In addition to featuring works by resident artists, we feature local products wherever possible. We include a welcome pack from Ethique (a local company making solid beauty bars), plants and floral arrangements from Bunch Floral (our in-house florist), and paper products by Innocent Packaging (a resident sustainable packaging company).
Free and unlimited wifi. Family friendly. Washer, dryer, ironing board. Laptop friendly workspace. Essentials provided (towels, sheets, toilet paper, soap, shampoo, conditioner, bodywash). Air conditioning, heating. Two bikes with locks and helmets available for use.
SOME THINGS TO NOTE...
Guests have full use of the apartment, please note that it is upstairs and has a private entry separate from the gallery below. There is no access to the downstairs gallery and cafe once it is closed for the night. The bedroom and bathroom are private, but the kitchen is used by the downstairs cafe for some baking and prep work in the morning. This means that you may meet our friendly cafe staff if you’re in the lounge area or work corner during the day. Occasionally it may also be used for cooking classes in the evening, please talk to us if this is an inconvenience for you.
Our smoke alarms are very sensitive so there is strictly no smoking, and also no candles, to save you a (very expensive) visit from the fire service.
No pets, no parties. But if you'd like to organise a workshop, exhibition, or event, talk to us about using the showcase space below.
Check-out is 10am and check-in is after 6pm, but you can store your luggage anytime. Three weeks maximum stay.
The loft is within half hour walking distance to many amenities. The bus is convenient to the central city and many suburbs. We have two free bikes available for use, and Christchurch has a great metro bike share. There is one private carpark behind the building and free parking on the street.. The airport shuttle is quick and affordable.
The heart of the CBD is within 30 minutes walking distance, but if you’d like to venture farther or faster we have an old Schwinn cruiser with basket and a sweet pink single speed that are free for you to use.
We’re in between the suburbs of Sydenham and Woolston. Sydenham is a short walk to the west and features smaller galleries as well as The Colombo for shopping and entertainment. To the east, Woolston is the home of craft beer breweries, and the Tannery - a Victorian arcade with shops, live music, an arts cinema, and yoga studio.
Buses to the beach suburb of Sumner or the port town of Lyttelton leave every 15 minutes and take only a half hour.
We are usually on site (but always available by phone) and happy to provide recommendations about food, drinks, and arts in Christchurch! Ask us about things to do in the region, within an hour you can be in native bush, deserted beaches, or wine country!
